Why do opossums die under houses?

The opossum is a quiet, nomadic animal that lives a solitary life. When searching for shelter, it looks for opportunities wherever it can. This clever marsupial has a nose that can sniff out a food source for miles. The ‘possum will eat bugs, garbage, eggs, leftover pet food, animal feed, and compost among other things. Because it is not a fussy eater, it can always find a decent meal when living near humans. If the opossum finds a plentiful source of food and water, adequate shelter, and relative peace and quiet, it will usually stay for a while, and make its new digs its nursery. Opossums are very disgusting: constantly pooping and urinating, leaving food debris everywhere, and spreading filth off their bodies. Because they are the size of a cat, their piles of feces are large. 


The underside of a porch that becomes home to an opossum is quickly saturated in urine, laden with feces, and covered in their food debris. If the possum is wounded (perhaps by your cat or dog), becomes ill, or has a difficult childbirth, it could die there. As you can imagine, the smell of its decaying body is awful. So once you are stuck with an opossum living under your house, what do you do? How can you rid yourself of this unwanted guest before or after it dies? Start with the obvious – make the opossum feel unwelcome. Get rid of any sources of food and water. Keep your garbage \ in sealed containers. Do not leave uneaten pet food out and secure any animal feed. Enclose the underside of your home.

Use siding, underpinning, or hardware cloth to assure that animals cannot access your homes underside. Opossums are not very motivated. They will not go to a lot of trouble to seek out or keep a home unless they have babies. Often you can use bright lights, colorful moving objects (like Mylar ribbons), and loud noises to make them uncomfortable enough to leave. If it is a female with babies, it will be harder to force her out. There are commercial repellents, like ammonia based substances, predator urine sprays, and other chemicals that might drive her off. You can set live traps, and have the mom and kids relocated. You can use exclusion funnels, and once mom leaves, she cannot get back in. You will have to go in and remove the young so they do not die there. Poisoning is an option, but never really a good idea.
